| description | the organic anion transporter 1 (oat-1 or slc22a6) is localized to the basolateral membrane of renal tubular epithelial cells and plays a critical role in the excretion and detoxification of anionic compounds. oat-1 functions as organic anion exchanger when the uptake of one molecule of organic anion is coupled with an efflux of one molecule of endogenous dicarboxylic acid (glutarate, ketoglutarate, etc). oat-1 mediates the sodium-independant uptake of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (dmps), p-aminohippurate (pah), ochratoxin (ota), acyclovir (acv) and many other organic compounds. |
